Gestamp, a multinational company specialized in the design, development, and manufacture of highly engineered metal components for the automotive industry, continues to strengthen sustainability as one of the key pillars of its business model. This year marks a decade of commitment and transparency, showcasing the company’s progress toward meeting its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
Since 2014, when Gestamp voluntarily published its first Sustainability Report — a pioneering milestone in the industry — the company has consolidated a business model based on innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability. The strategy driven by Gestamp has generated value for its stakeholders while becoming a competitive advantage that has enabled the company to expand its presence across 24 countries, reinforce its leadership in the sector, and achieve revenues exceeding €12 billion.
Over the past decade, Gestamp has continued contributing to the decarbonization of the automotive industry by improving process efficiency and developing innovative technologies to reduce emissions, among other initiatives. The company has cut its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 41.8% compared to its 2018 baseline and currently sources 50% of its electricity from renewable sources — a figure it is committed to increasing to 62% by 2025.
At the same time, Gestamp has advanced toward cleaner and more efficient mobility through its circular economy strategy, which promotes the use of more sustainable raw materials, material recycling, and collaboration with strategic partners to carry out initiatives aimed at decarbonizing the automotive industry. The management model for the circular economy strategy of Gestamp is certified by AENOR, which has awarded the company the “Zero Waste” certificate in recognition of its commitment to ensuring that nearly all of its waste is recycled or recovered.
Gestamp promotes the use of high-quality scrap — generated during its own manufacturing processes — as a secondary raw material for producing low-emission steel, which the company can then reuse to manufacture automotive components. This strategy is developed in collaboration with Gescrap, a subsidiary of Gestamp dedicated to materials recycling and the management of metal waste.
Driving this circular economy model is particularly relevant for materials such as steel and aluminum, which account for over 70% of Gestamp’s total carbon footprint due to their primary production processes.
Strengthening Gestamp’s social contribution
In 2024, the Gestamp Foundation was established with the goal of promoting personal and professional development through opportunity creation and sustainable growth. During the year, the Foundation carried out 308 initiatives benefiting more than 38,000 people across various countries, with around 7,000 company volunteers participating in these social activities.
In addition, in 2024 the Gestamp Foundation launched nine projects — in collaboration with 20 partner organizations — focused on mobility, education, and environmental sustainability, implemented across five countries. Through these initiatives, Gestamp reinforces its contribution to the social and economic development of the regions where it operates.
Gestamp has also continued to focus on talent development, inclusion, and employee well-being. With a workforce of more than 43,000 people worldwide, the company achieved a rate of 27% female new hires and strengthened its equality, diversity, and inclusion plan.
A robust governance model
Gestamp has a solid governance model in which both the Board of Directors and senior management are directly involved in the design and execution of the company’s sustainability strategy. In this regard, the Sustainability Committee — which supports the Board of Directors — is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Group’s sustainability policies and overseeing progress in this area.
Additionally, the ESG Committee ensures that all corporate decisions take into account long-term sustainability criteria, guaranteeing the integration of environmental, social, and governance aspects into the company’s business model.
“Sustainability is an essential pillar of Gestamp’s business model because it allows us to create value for our stakeholders while generating a key competitive advantage to continue offering innovative solutions that also contribute to the automotive industry’s progress toward decarbonization”, said Francisco J. Riberas, Executive Chairman of Gestamp. “Our long-term vision is fundamental to achieving more balanced social and economic development — an area where companies play a decisive role as drivers of change”, he emphasized.
