Gestamp, benefactor of exhibition ‘Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture’

The exhibition celebrates the artistic dimension of the automobile

12.05.2022

Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture, the new exhibition displayed in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao  and curated by the architect Norman Foster, celebrates the artistic dimension of the automobile and links it to the parallel worlds of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography and film. Therefore, in its 25th anniversary, Gestamp is being part of the exhibition as a benefactor, taking into account that since 1997 the multinational company of automotive components has also lived through this motion story that has accompanied humanity until today.

In this “holistic approach”, as Norman Foster says, the exhibition, which will be available until 18th September, challenges the separate silos of these disciplines and explores how they are visually and culturally linked together. The exhibition considers the affinities between industrial design, architecture, and art, demonstrating the influences each have had on the others.

The emotion of living Art history through automotive stories
The exhibition, which is a celebration of the artistic dimension of the automobile, brings together 38 vehicles—each the best of its kind in such terms as beauty, rarity, technical progress, and a vision of the future. These are placed centre stage in the galleries and surrounded by significant works of art and architecture. Each room is about the relationship between different aspects, such as the design, sculpture, painting, architecture, graphics or even fashion in an artistic conversation with automotive stories.

Many of these automobiles are the only one of their class worldwide. Therefore, it is a unique experience to enjoy such unique cars as the Benz Patent Wagon, the first automobiles in history, which was created in 1886, together with an Andy Warhol painting from 1986 featuring the very same car. It is just one example of how automotive history has completely transformed our way of life. A reflection in an era of challenges: an inflexion point for the future of our mobility.
